2025: Special Edition: Case Studies in Assessment and Feedback Design

This special edition has been compiled as part of a five-year institutional project to support and enhance LJMU's assessment and feedback policy and guidance framework. The initiative sought to catalogue exemplary instances of novel assessment design across the university, creating a valuable resource that demonstrates what is possible within our current policy environment while supporting the broader higher education community with practical innovations.

The case studies featured here were gathered through targeted engagement with programme leaders across LJMU's schools, who identified outstanding examples of assessment innovation worthy of wider recognition and sharing. Each featured educator participated in detailed interviews exploring their design principles, implementation strategies, and outcomes, which were then developed into these comprehensive case studies.

This collection demonstrates that LJMU's assessment and feedback policies provide a robust yet flexible foundation that enables meaningful experimentation and educational innovation. The teaching staff featured here exemplify educators who actively seek creative solutions for developing engaging curricula and assessments that not only measure learning effectively but genuinely inspire and encourage student development.

In these particularly challenging times for higher education, characterized by increasing student numbers, constrained resources, and evolving educational demands, these dedicated professionals are to be commended for their unwavering commitment to their students and their pursuit of educational excellence. Their innovations show that limitations can become catalysts for creativity, and that passionate educators can transform constraints into opportunities for enhanced learning experiences.

Student Experience Proceedings collates the institutional level events and conferences organised by LJMU.
