The importance of communication and professional values relating to nursing practice

Abstract

A discussion about two areas of nursing which are important in delivering safe and effective care to patients these include: communication and professional values. Communication is defined and explored and barriers to communication are identified and how they can impact patient care has been highlighted. How a nurses own values can impact on patients care both positively and negatively.

Author Biography

Lucy Fitzpatrick, Liverpool John Moores University

Lucy is a student nurse in her second year of training to become an adult nurse at Liverpool John Moores University. She is also a student mentor and a student quality ambassador which demonstrates her commitment to nursing and personal development. Lucy has had a variety of placements in the community and in hospitals these include health visiting, fracture clinic, nursing home, gastroenterology ward and cardiology ward. During this time Lucy had a particular interest in communication and professional values and its importance within nursing.  She chose to explore them in more detail to enhance her knowledge.
